Review: The Trophy Girl by Kate Lace
Daphne Du Maurier meets Jilly Cooper in Kate Lace’s fabulous new novel for Little Black Dress: The Trophy Girl!
Lucy Carter loves her job as a nanny, but when her employers inform her that they are off to America and won’t be requiring her services for the time being, Lucy realizes that, unless she finds another position soon, she could end up living back at her mum’s and having to put up with her infuriating boyfriend Dave. When she spots another nannying job advertised in a glossy magazine, Lucy decides to apply for the position, but when she turns up for the interview, she is shocked when she realizes that, if selected, she’ll be the nanny to the son of Edward, Earl of Arden, and the late Becca Hetherington! Lucy thinks that one of the country’s most eligible aristocrats will not hire a girl like her, who grew up in suburbia and who pretty much learnt her trade on the job rather than at a fancy nannying school, to look after his son, so she’s flabbergasted when she receives a phone call telling her that she got the job!
Lucy finds herself swapping city life for fresh country air, but she soon finds out that life amongst the rich and famous is anything but plain sailing! Her new charge, Teddy, is a quiet, withdrawn and cripplingly shy three year old who needs taking out of himself, the housekeeper, Mrs. Porter, seems to spend her every waking thought looking down her nose at Lucy and her employer is nowhere to be seen! It seems that the Earl of Arden would much rather spend time on business trips than with his son and Lucy is not in the least bit impressed. But when the Earl of Arden comes back to his country pile, Lucy finds herself getting all hot and bothered…
Edward is not only tall, dark, rich and devastatingly handsome, but he’s also smart, witty, kind-hearted and intelligent. Lucy soon begins to fall for her employer, but she knows that a relationship with him is out of the question. For one thing, Lucy is just an ordinary girl from the suburbs, whilst he is a member of the aristocracy, secondly, Edward doesn’t seem to have got over his wife’s death, and thirdly, his late wife’s best friend, Zoe, is determined to ensure that she is the next Countess of Arden.
But will Zoe succeed in her nefarious plan to becomes Edward’s new wife? Was Edward’s past as idyllic as everyone believed? And will Lucy ever manage to find her own Prince Charming?
The Trophy Girl is a thoroughly enjoyable romantic romp from the riotous pen of one of Little Black Dress’s most talented authors: Kate Lace! Warm, witty, feel-good and wonderfully romantic, The Trophy Girl is not to be missed!
