Review: Rocken Edge by Wendy K. Harris

"Subtle, perceptive, moving and absolutely breathtaking, Wendy K. Harris’ page-turning contemporary tales, set on the Isle of Wight, are not to be missed. In her third Undercliff novel, Rocken Edge, Ms. Harris has written another spellbinding tale about life, morality, emotion and humanity that will not just move and enthrall readers, but will also make them reflect about their own lives."

Clare is a young traumatized teenager who has just given birth to a baby she doesn’t want. The young mother had never even thought about having children, but fate and circumstance have compelled her to give birth to a baby in terrible conditions. Clare had decided to come to the Isle of Wight in search of a friend of hers she had met on her journey from Ireland called Rose. But the journey is a long and arduous one, and weighed down by her heavy backpack and her baby, not to mention her own personal demons, Claire soon begins to wonder just what she has let herself in for!

But it isn’t just Clare who is having a tough time on the Isle of Wight. Rachel sits in her seafront café, unaware of all the traumas which young Clare is going through, for she too has her own personal skeletons to contend with. Up until recently, Rachel had been extremely happy: she had her own business, had been making plans to convert the café into an Italian restaurant and, most importantly, the love of a supportive partner in the shape of her lover Sandro. Rachel had risked her heart and had been prepared to risk her livelihood for him, so she is shocked when Sandro disappears into thin air. What has happened to him? Has he left her? What forced him to leave her and why did he choose to vanish now when she’s invested so much time and money into their new venture?

Meanwhile, Fran, an elderly sheep farmer is desperate to cling on to her rundown Undercliff farm. But with the passing of time, Fran cannot help but acknowledge that she isn’t getting any younger. Although her animals have given her so much pleasure over the years, she cannot help but wonder how long she will be able to go on like this.

It isn’t just the women that are having a rough time of it. Across the Irish sea, Father Ryan is a man whose life has become riddled with insecurity and with fear. Father Ryan had dedicated his life to the Church and to God. But recently, Father Ryan has been plagued by doubts about his faith and about the God who has defined his existence. He cannot help but question the reason behind the fact that he has never felt the love of the God whom he has served for as long as he can remember. Has the time come for Father Ryan to make a change?

Clare, Rachel, Fran and Father Ryan are four different individuals whose lives will change as they question and investigate the many facets of a love that is harmful, dangerous, insidious, but also healing and essential.

Rocken Edge is a stunning work of fiction from a novelist who is at the height of her powers. Wendy K Harris always writes intelligently, sensitively and compassionately and readers will be enthralled by the lives and loves of the people who people her books. Exceptionally well-written, immensely powerful and highly absorbing, Rocken Edge is intelligent women’s fiction at its most mesmerizing best!
