Abbie Colman and Chris Michaels had fallen passionately in love with one another even though all the odds were stacked against them. Abbie was the only child of South Carolina’s most senior senator, who had wanted something more for his daughter than a poor boy who had grown up in a trailer park on the wrong side of the tracks.
