Review: Where The River Ends by Charles Martin
Abbie Colman and Chris Michaels had fallen passionately in love with one another even though all the odds were stacked against them. Abbie was the only child of South Carolina’s most senior senator, who had wanted something more for his daughter than a poor boy who had grown up in a trailer park on the wrong side of the tracks. Social class and parental interference had not proved to be a barrier to the tempestuous feelings which Abbie and Chris had for one another. Defying all the odds, Abbie and Chris had eloped and got married, returning only to face the wrath of their parents, who seemed convinced that they would never last the distance. But last the distance they did, and for fourteen years, they’ve had a happy and successful marriage. But life for Abbie and Chris has never been easy or straightforward.
Four years ago, Abbie had been diagnosed with breast cancer and her prognosis had got progressively worse. Chris cannot bear to see the woman he loves above everything else in the world wither away in a sterile and bland hospital room, so he vows to do something in order to alleviate her pain and to make his wife’s final days on this earth as comfortable and as memorable as possible. So, he packs her bags and, in the middle of the night, smuggles her out of the hospital.
Chris doesn’t care that his father-in-law will have the police after him for “kidnapping” Abbie. He just wants to see his wife smile and to make her every wish come true. Abbie has a list of ten things which she’d like to do before she dies; ten simple and straightforward wishes which seemed out of reach when lying in her cold hospital bed. Chris is determined to ensure that his wife gets her heart’s desire. But his father-in-law is determined not to let some trailer trash boy ruin the last few days of his daughter’s life and he will stop at nothing until he succeeds.
However, is the power of their love strong enough to triumph during these difficult times?
Charles Martin will pull at your heartstrings with this wonderfully-written and powerfully told tale of love, family and redemption. Where the River Ends is a beguiling and captivating tale written by a master storyteller who is set to become one of the biggest name in contemporary fiction! Miss this book at your peril!
