Review: Fat Chance by Rhonda Pollero

"Amusingly entertaining and filled with fascinatingly appealing characters, FAT CHANCE tackles a mystery while also tickling your funny bone."

When Finley Anderson Tanner becomes involved in a mystery, the reader knows there will be numerous action-packed situations plus plenty of humor to counteract any suspenseful tension. Rhonda Pollero has created a charmingly likeable heroine where her unique personality comes alive through crafty writing and original scenarios.

As a paralegal for a Palm Beach law firm, Finley Anderson Tanner does the duties required of her but always makes certain to work some shopping into her schedule. Finley loves designer clothes, but her budget forces her to acquire her famous name purchases at much less than retail. When her mother offers to sell her a beachfront cottage at an excellent price, she loves the idea of owning a home in the exclusive area yet cannot help but question what motivated the proposal. After hastily signing the contract, the house appears to be quaintly delightful when she gets a look at her new home. That is, until an inspection of the inside shows many needed repairs before she can move in. When a dead body is found in a closet, Finley knows she has added one more mistake to her life.

After talking with the police about how a body came to be in her just purchased property, they seem to think the person was probably homeless and was living in the vacant house. Finley has trouble dismissing the death of the person as accidental and begins an investigation on her own. Assisting her, whether she wants his help or not, is Liam McGarrity, a private investigator with whom she has an awkward past. Also, Tony Caprelli, the new criminal defense lawyer at her firm, offers his help. Finley is determined to uncover what lead to there being a body in the closet of her new home, with and without all the unexpected help, even when threats turn deadly.

Rhonda Pollero brilliantly blends humor, suspense and romance to create instantly enjoyable stories in the F.A.T. series. The characters are distinctly original and the plots are engagingly compelling. Ms. Pollero always comes up with a novel idea for the premise of the story, and then executes it with innovative and frequently amusing escapades. Although there is normally seriousness to many of the situations faced by Finley, more often than not, there will also be some humor tossed in somewhere along the way. Sometimes it may be a physical reaction and other times it may be just a quick thought, but each one seems to lighten the weightiness of the moment. However, the actual significance of what just occurred and any following consequences are depicted with an insight into how Finley truly feels about what is going on around her. This lets the reader know there is more to this woman than just trying to be fashionable on a budget. With an undercurrent of sexual tension all the way through the story, there are plenty of scenes where the thoughts of the heroine are hilarious, yet these unspoken declarations are more truthful than any words she actually speaks to the men affecting her. Finley is at her best when she lets her real feelings be shown through snappy comebacks, and you will definitely be chuckling numerous times with the clever writing evident during the whole story. There are several secondary characters who are also likably captivating, and they add much to any scene in which they appear. FAT CHANCE sparkles by incorporating wittiness into an intriguing mystery, where the outcome is never certain until the last enthralling word is read.
