Review: Every Demon Has His Day by Cara Lockwood
Comical from the onset, EVERY DEMON HAS HIS DAY repeatedly has the reader chuckling from the series of madcap and never-ending bizarre scenarios which crop up throughout this delightful story. Cara Lockwood has created an exceedingly original premise, and skillfully carries it out by featuring diverse characters in a cleverly witty storyline.
After Constance Plyd had one momentous date with Nathan Garrett, the womanizing man left town the next day. Constance was hurt and angry enough to end up marrying a man who was the complete opposite of Nathan. Although she gave nine years of her life to her husband, things just did not work out and they are getting a divorce. Nathan recently returned to their small hometown near Dallas to become its sheriff. Unfortunately, their first meeting is very unpleasant as her just about ex-husband is discovered dead in their garage and it does not look like an accident.
When Nathan arrives on the scene, he is instantly taken with the more mature appearance of Constance. He also realizes all the evidence seems to point to her being the killer of her husband. Constance then divulges to the still way too handsome sheriff how she believes the man who killed her husband is a demon, or at least that is what his business card stated. Of course, Nathan does not believe her but wants to uncover more facts before he arrests her for murder. Her life turns even more strange when her deceased not quite ex shows up as a ghost with a message about her being a prophet. This leads to her getting instructions from a dog who knows English very well, and her assignment is to use her visions to stop the head demon from using his powers to create the Antichrist. Now Constance finds herself in the middle of a battle between good and evil where the outcome will profoundly affect the whole world.
Cara Lockwood knows how to entertain readers with innovative plots and dynamically appealing characters. EVERY DEMON HAS HIS DAY takes what seems to be an ordinary town with common folks, and then lets an extraordinary situation turn some of their lives upside down and sometimes totally devastating. However, during most of the unusual incidents, there are still moments where the lighter side of life peeks through and gives readers a giggle or two or maybe even three. The plot of this book is definitely incredible, yet Ms. Lockwood keeps the story flowing right along by making each subsequent event occur in a likely way. Readers should not take EVERY DEMON HAS HIS DAY too seriously, but just need to sit back and enjoy this imaginative tale where amazing possibilities seem the norm. There are enough everyday issues to make this seem like a normal romance at times, as Nathan and Constance have a past history which heavily plays an important part during much of the story while the supernatural aspects are a captivatingly added bonus. Watching these two interact with each other is portrayed with numerous real emotions and some lively dialogue. Constance continuously comes in contact with some extremely atypical individuals, and each one heightens the satisfaction of this fun novel. From sarcastic demons to a likable dog who talks to a bumbling ghost, these beings are inventively depicted. EVERY DEMON HAS HIS DAY has amusing escapades, unique characters and a fresh approach to the paranormal.
