Review: THE DIARY by Eileen Goudge

"A perfect gift for Mother’s Day…"

Two sisters, Emily and Sarah, discover an old diary as they are cleaning out their mother’s home place, readying it for selling. Their father, Bob, has been dead for several years and their mother, Elizabeth, is in a nursing home; the result of a debilitating stroke. Emily and Sarah realize that the diary tells their mother’s love story and it isn’t what the girls expect. Could it be that their father is not their mother’s one true love?

Elizabeth and Bob have been linked together since high school. Bob is steadfast, loyal and predictable plus Elizabeth’s outspoken, social conscience mother likes him. One day, while rushing to meet Bob at the county fair, Elizabeth becomes reacquainted with a childhood playmate, the unpredictable, exciting, bad boy AJ. He steals her heart but she is committed to Bob. However, their one passionate night together is discovered as Elizabeth provides AJ’s alibi when he is accused of arson. Reputation ruined and her pending engagement to Bob called off; Elizabeth is left with a shaky promise from AJ, as he leaves town, that he will return.

Best-selling author Eileen Goudge lovingly tells a story inspired by her own parent’s love story. This is not the conventional boy meets girl, falls in love and marries fairytale. THE DIARY is a realistic love story filled with rocky roads that lead to passion. It is richly rewarding and thoughtfully touching. I promise, you will not see the ending coming nor be able to finish this beautiful book without shedding a few tears, so keep your hanky handy.

Eileen Goudge has set up a Mother’s Day website, http://www.betsdiary.com/, with lots of ideas for Mother’s Day!

I’ve seen this book on several blogs of late. I think it would be absolutely fascinating to find an old diary and read the treasures inside.
