Laird of the Mist by Paula Quinn
There is building suspense throughout the story as to what will happen to the couple whom readers will come to love, as their poignant feelings are revealed and actions often speak louder than any spoken words. This is the first book in a new series by Paula Quinn, and it begins with an enchanting story of love and redemption.
When Katherine Campbell was honing her skills with a sword, she had no idea of how useful her training would be later in the day. Her despised uncle has come to take her to his home, and his men attack the raiders who have come down from the mountains. Kate joins in the fight along side the men, but she soon finds herself tiring from the continuing skirmish. Suddenly, a man appears at her side, one who saves her from those who would mortally harm her. Unhappily, Kate quickly realizes the man belongs to the clan MacGregor, the one clan who is looked down upon by other clans because of its ruthless behavior and unlawfulness. She is even more disheartened when she learns the man is Callun MacGregor, the fearless laird of his clan and known as The Devil.
The moment Callum saw the bonny lass fighting bravely amongst the men in battle, he admired her courage. When he decides to take her back to his home and use her as leverage in bending her uncle to his will, he continues to see her feisty nature come to the surface. Though Callum is intrigued by Kate, he never lets on to her or his men just how deeply his inner thoughts are affected by being around this woman. As they travel to his castle located where the mist often keeps his home hidden, Kate senses there is much more to this forbidding man than he lets anyone actually see. When the motives which drive Callum and Kate slowly become known, each of them must decide whether to follow their convictions or what is in their hearts.
For her historical stories, Paula Quinn knows exactly how to capture the imagination of her readers by giving them memorable characters and enthralling plots. Her tales are sweeping in nature, with settings which are visually stunning and where the exploits are frequently heart-pounding. In LAIRD OF THE MIST, readers will be transported to Scotland in the 1600’s, when one’s name could determine what the future will hold for them. Ms. Quinn interweaves historical facts into the lives of her characters, while giving them genuine reactions to the situations they must face on a daily basis. Callum and Kate are such an endearing couple, and I found myself aching for how their lives are turned upside down with only dire prospects for them ever having a relationship. With their true emotions often being difficult to conceal, this couple touched me with the intensity of their feelings and from what they discovered about themselves during the story. When their actions are controlled by desire, the moments are heartfelt and profoundly passionate. There are numerous secondary characters who are delightful in both manner and speech, plus several individuals who are despicable in every way. The next book in the series certainly cannot arrive fast enough! LAIRD OF THE MIST is a notable romance about characters who will stay with you long after the book is finished and leave you wanting more.
