Review: Don’t Bargain with the Devil (The School for Heiresses) by Sabrina Jeffries

"DON’T BARGAIN WITH THE DEVIL entertains, mesmerizes and divulges numerous revelations to keep readers captivated during every engaging scene."

The School for Heiresses series releases a fifth book, and the compelling plots only become more enjoyable with this enchanting romance and its endearingly dynamic couple. Sabrina Jeffries brings England in the early 1800’s to life with vividly detailed settings and the many social issues faced by the different classes of this period.

After being rebuffed by her current suitor because he felt she would not make him a proper wife, Lucinda Seton believes she might need to change her ways or never find a man who will want to marry her. Lucy has been told she speaks before actually thinking by several individuals, and she is determined to amend her ways when she becomes a temporary teacher at Mrs. Harris’s School for Young Ladies. On her first day back at the school which she previously attended as a student, she meets a most fascinating man while exploring neighboring property. When she discovers the worldly male, Diego Javier Montalvo, is not only living in the untenanted nearby home but is also a talented magician, Lucy knows she must show some self-discipline over her reaction to the handsome man. She is happy with the way she handles him, but is infuriated when she returns to the school and is told he plans to build a pleasure garden on the property which will probably destroy their school.

Even though Diego is a renowned magician, he really has another reason for being in the area. He has been assigned the task of finding the kidnapped granddaughter of a Spanish aristocrat, and if he is successful, Diego can repossess the estate lost by his family. Unfortunately, he must be positive of her identity before he can tell her about his plans, and when facts point towards Lucy being the missing woman, he needs to gain her trust to make certain all he knows about her is correct. Lucy will soon find herself in situations where she has to decide if everything Diego tells her is believable, while he must make one of the most difficult choices of his life between listening to what his mind tells him to do and following what his heart wants.

Sabrina Jeffries weaves remarkable historical stories with appealing characters and intriguing scenarios. This skilled author has definitely hit the mark with her enjoyable The School for Heiresses series, and her latest book will keep the reader enthralled for hours. From start to finish, DON’T BARGAIN WITH THE DEVIL will frequently leave you smiling yet also often touch your heart with the intensely portrayed emotional scenes. The main characters of Diego and Lucy are two very vocal individuals, as their fervent natures lead led them to speak their thoughts with much passion behind their words. Even their unspoken inner thoughts are emotively conveyed, as I could feel their extreme joy or distraught anguish. Though Diego is plagued by personal demons, he is still an exceedingly honorable man, one I totally admired for his unwavering convictions. Lucy is an absolute delight in every one of her scenes, as her spirited personality came through regardless of the situation. Ms. Jeffries has a way of making the narrative distinctive, especially the countless original conversations and any reactions to these exchanges. Whether the character is at the focus of the novel or a secondary one, each one sparkles with life and adds much to the story. There are several surprises sprinkled throughout the book, and their disclosures are unforeseen and sometimes shocking. The next book will be about Charlotte Harris and her mysterious cousin Michael, and I am very anxious to see what transpires. DON’T BARGAIN WITH THE DEVIL is a profoundly moving story of emotional discovery and adventures of the heart.
