Review: Holding Out for a Hero (The Frasers) by Ana Leigh
The fifth book in The Frasers series continues with an enthralling story about a determined hero and a spirited heroine, each of whom will face numerous obstacles along the trail to having a happy future. This western romance set in the 1870’s is a shining example of why Ana Leigh is known for her creative stories which bring the Old West to life with compelling plots and appealing characters.
As a civilian scout for a fort located in Arizona, Rico Fraser is believed to be the best tracker in the area. He does the work requested of him to the best of his ability, but he is constantly on the lookout for Ben Slatter, the man responsible for killing his mother. After not discovering the whereabouts of the man who has haunted him for three years, he is ready to move on until a local woman is kidnapped by the Statter outlaw gang. When Rico is offered the job of finding the ruthless men and bringing Jennifer Burke back to her wealthy father, he believes the time has come for his enemy to finally pay for his crimes.
Rico manages to locate the hiding place of the gang, but while he saves Jenny from certain death, Slatter gets away. His hopes are dashed for going back to California and settling down any time soon, as there is no way he can leave the area until he is positive Slatter is actually dead. Furthermore, the feisty woman whom he rescued intrigues him, and as he spends time around Jenny, he finds himself exceedingly attracted to her. She is also fascinated by Rico but does not like his career choice. With misconceptions and vows plaguing their relationship, Rico and Jenny will have to decide what is most important in their lives.
Ana Leigh writes about men and woman who could have lived in America’s past, and this knowledgeable author frequently gives these brave individuals a number of particularly realistic problems to confront. From dramatically dangerous moments to scenes where emotions are at the forefront, readers will be pulled into this engaging historical as their own feelings will become involved. The suspense during several of the incidents will make you gasp as you wait to see what will happen. Then there is the delightful banter between Rico and Jenny to make to smile. However, it is the often intensely emotional scenes which will grab your attention as they give insight to how these characters really think and feel. These two have some inner personal struggles constantly affecting how they react, and seeing how they responded to each other during different situations made for some interesting encounters. The unfinished business in the complex life of Rico is movingly told, and the motivations driving him are certainly worthy, especially in this time period. Although Jenny and he did not always agree on things, she could still get a feel for his true nature, thus proving the power of love. There are some delightful individuals in this story and then there are some despicable ones, too, and Ms. Leigh has their personalities clearly coming through more than once. The western local is vividly described, and this lets the imagination of the reader transport them to another time and place. One also gets to catch up with numerous characters from previous books in The Frasers series, definitely a treat. HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO intertwines perilous threats, profound emotions and heartfelt passions to keep the gratification coming.
