Review: Bound by Your Touch by Meredith Duran

"The accurately crafted setting plus cleverly original premise of BOUND BY YOUR TOUCH brings nineteenth century London to life with constantly intriguing exploits."

There is never a lull in this story, as the numerous dynamically spirited characters keep every scene lively yet totally plausible. Meredith Duran adds plenty of emotional realism to each situation, thus making BOUND BY YOUR TOUCH rivetingly captivating.

After one devastating attempt at having a fulfilling relationship, Lydia Boyce now dedicates her time to helping her father seek funding for his explorations in Egypt while she also keeps his antiquities trade running smoothly in London. During a lecture to hopefully procure money, Lydia proves her knowledge pertaining to Egypt is well founded, but is agitated when Viscount Sanburne causes a commotion during her speak. Their next meeting further infuriates her when his accusation, if repeated, would cause a disastrous scandal for her father and even her whole family.

When Lydia tries to prove there is nothing discreditable about her father’s dealings, her path keeps colliding with James Durham, the annoying yet also appealing Viscount Sanburne. Much of how he reacts is like a game to him, yet there is also a more concerned side to him of which he usually does not speak. When actual threats crop up, James finds he cannot abandon Lydia when he knows she will not back down, especially when her true passionate nature is revealed and draws him closer to her. As these two hunt for the truth behind the questions about their families, much soul-searching must be done before complete trust can be given.

Meredith Duran makes her historical stories striking with visual imagery, giving credibility to every enthralling scene. The feeling of being transported to another time period is profoundly convincing, as remarkably vivid details and distinguishing dialogue has countless aspects in this novel dramatically coming alive. With the added bonus of distinctive characters, both main and secondary, the circumstances surrounding them is continuously engrossing. All during this innovative story, there are some surprising revelations while the emotional stakes continue to climb, especially when hearts become involved. Ms. Duran knows exactly how to make a scene gripping with heartfelt sentiments, and some of the encounters between James and Lydia are exceedingly vocal yet always fueled by inner feelings. Lydia is a most exceptional woman for her time period, and although some only see her as a bluestocking, James actually takes the time to look below the surface and discovers the fervently passionate woman underneath the known intellectual. As these two go through several trials while getting to truly know each other, there are some instances of clever banter plus dilemmas with only distressing anguish evident, where every emotion is depicted with candid sincerity. From the time fate entwined the lives of this couple together, several dangerous escapades arise and these incidents are momentarily intense with suspense. There is a sprinkling of insight into the next book in this series, and I look forward to more disclosures about its fascinating couple. BOUND BY YOUR TOUCH is an enchanting romance filled with affecting emotions and diverse adventures.
