Review: Shoot to Thrill by Nina Bruhns

"There is suspenseful danger and blazing passions right from the start of SHOOT TO THRILL, and both escalate to explosive levels by the conclusion of this rewarding novel."

The Passion For Danger series begins with a romantic adventure packed with daring action and fervent desires, where there is never a lull of either in the lives of the spirited hero and heroine. Nina Bruhns creates credible characters whose intelligence, emotions and hopes come across as realistically believable, and her talent is present during every compelling scene of SHOOT TO THRILL.

Although Kick Jackson wants nothing to do with the secretive CIA group to which he belonged before being gravely injured, it seems a waiver he signed makes it possible for them to demand his cooperation whether he wants to give it or not. Kick has managed to evade those looking for him so far, and his current plan to dodge them ends up involving an emergency room nurse who is just looking for one night of social entertainment. What she gets is an adventure where the conclusion of almost every moment is uncertain.

From the instant Rainie Martin spied Kick at the gathering, she senses danger surrounding him and this intrigues her. After they leave together, she quickly realizes his intentions are not completely as she interpreted. Then a group of mysterious men forces them to comply with their requests, and Rainie comes to comprehend her life will never be the same. Since a terrorist who is planning a ruthless attack is only known by Kick, the black-ops agent is being sent to a foreign country to prevent this plot from occurring. Unfortunately, an unforeseen situation has Rainie joining him on his dangerously perilous mission, where she must triumph over her fears or neither may make it back home alive.

Innovative plots and distinctive characters are a trademark of any story by Nina Bruhns. One of the concepts behind SHOOT TO THRILL is action-packed exploits, and Ms. Bruhns certainly delivers them in abundance. The story barely begins before an intriguing scenario is set in motion, and this gripping incident only leads to more dangerous situations with very little downtime in between. There are numerous unexpected encounters during the story, many of which will leave you guessing as to the true motives behind anything said and done. One storyline running throughout the book will profoundly move you, as its outcome becomes extremely important for several reasons. The genuine reactions of Kick and Rainie are convincing, and many of their verbal responses are inventively detailed, especially when a situation is life-threatening. There are times when neither of them holds back on their inner feelings and this makes the story more emotively convincing. Whether they are expressing their deepest fears or their enthusiastic longing for the other, they put their whole heart into the moment and touched me with their palpable sincerity. Watching them sort out the countless issues they encounter is also insightful, as unspoken feelings frequently dictate how they respond during these emotional conflicts. The smoldering passions felt by Kick and Rainie for each other are intensely fiery, and it only takes one small spark to make their normally rational control momentarily vanish. Ms. Bruhns knows how to write a steamy love scene and these two repeatedly prove this point. Regardless of where the action is taking place, the descriptive settings let the reader feel as though they are there, too. One of the main characters for the next book is introduced in this story, and I am most anxious to learn more about this exceedingly appealing hero. Darkly dramatic plus sensually stirring, SHOOT TO THRILL is an adventure of the heart which plays on your every emotion.
