Review: Written on Your Skin by Meredith Duran
Whether you have read BOUND BY YOUR TOUCH or not, and you definitely must, WRITTEN ON YOUR SKIN has its own storyline and easily stands alone. Meredith Duran has crafted an innovative historical romance with a particularly original couple, where genuine emotions and earnestly sincere hopes are conveyed with realism.
While benefiting from the comforts made possible by the wealth of her stepfather, Mina Masters does not like the man and knows of his illegal dealings. Mina desperately wants him out of her life, especially with his plans to marry her to a business associate. When an intriguing man, Phin Granville, comes into her life while traveling with her family, she hopes he might be the answer to preventing any marriage from taking place. After he becomes gravely ill during a social event both are attending, she quickly realizes Phin is not what he seems and helps him escape from what would have been certain death.
When the British spy first met Mina while he was investigating her stepfather, Phin believed her to be unintelligent and superficial. However, after her unexpected assistance, he knew much of her behavior was just an act. With his continued dislike for his profession, he welcomes the opportunity to become an Earl as it lets him stop being a spy. Unfortunately, Phin feels compelled to assist in finding the missing mother of Mina when she asks for his help, as he cannot disregard that fateful night from four years ago. Although they were not truthful with each other during their previous encounter, these two realize trust must be established or they will not be able to effectively work together, even when fervent longing threatens their control.
Meredith Duran is a premier historical novelist who draws you into her fascinating worlds filled with intriguing exploits and dynamic characters. Her style of writing takes the reader right into the heart of the moment being depicted, as every detail is put into imaginative words. You will almost feel each touch, reactions are convincing and thoughts seem honestly frank. The emotions fueling the actions of the hero and heroine are never far from the surface, although they frequently leave them not only unspoken but also denied in every way. Phin and Mina are such unique characters, whose distinguishing natures make them extremely appealing and even more believable as someone living through the set of circumstances forced on them. The distinctive situations created by Ms. Duran for these two to face are skillfully executed by calling forth their inner feelings, leaving the reader with a little more insight into their true personalities after each one. There are numerous unexpected turns during WRITTEN ON YOUR SKIN, and they make this already tense plot emotively gripping. The remarkable storytelling talent of Ms. Duran transports the reader to another era, where day-to-day life may have been different but personal sentiments are still deeply felt and greatly affect the outcome of most occurrences. This is a complex love story, as Phin and Mina have much to overcome before they can be actually happy, as trust issues and selflessness come into play. They are a cunningly intelligent couple, and it was delightful to see them react with smart banter and clever deeds. The intimate scenes between them are certainly packed with plenty of fiery heat, while their heartfelt feelings make the moment caringly tender. WRITTEN ON YOUR SKIN is noteworthy with building suspense, soaring passions and characters whose appeal is unrivaled.
