Review: The Undoing of a Lady by Nicola Cornick
Lady Elizabeth Scarlet does not have the best of reputations. Her outrageous behavior, hoydenish ways and her penchant for flirting have been shocking the genteel sensibilities of the ladies of Fortune’s Folly for years – and Lizzie has got absolutely no intention of turning over a new leaf and take up more genteel pursuits like embroidery or sewing. Instead, she takes to her horse and gallops wildly across the beautiful Yorkshire moors, looking for trouble and adventure – much to the exasperation of her childhood companion Nathaniel, the Earl of Waterhouse!
Nat has always had a lot of time for Lizzie. Having been orphaned as a child and then been sent to live with her stepfather and her two brothers, Montague and Tom, who never had any time for her, Lizzie has always appreciated Nat’s generosity, kindness and compassion. Unlike the other inhabitants of the village of Fortune’s Folly, Nat has never judged, ridiculed or used her; rather he has always protected her from other’s people scurrilous tongues and hurtful gossip. Now, the time has finally come for Lizzie to do her part and protect Nat from a fate worse than death – by abducting him on the eve of his wedding to Miss Flora Minchin!
Nat does not love Flora nor does he desire her, but he is in desperate need of money and marriage seems to be the only option available to him. Failing to secure a fortune could have serious consequences for Nat and his family and he is not about to let lack of affection for his would-be bride get in the way of protecting the ones he loves – which is why he is absolutely furious that Lizzie has dreamt up this hare-brained scheme to abduct him and prevent him from marrying Miss Minchin! Nat must escape from Lizzie’s captivity – and what better way is there to distract her than by seducing her?
Lizzie had never thought of Nat in that way, but when he kisses her he awakens in her feelings of intense passion which manage to shock even the hoydenish Lady Scarlet! And when their fiery kisses lead to a night of passionate love-making, Lizzie soon begins to see her childhood friend in an entirely different light…
Will Lizzie be able to convince Nat that they a perfect match? Or will she lose the man she has grown to love?
The Undoing of a Lady is superb in every way! I savored every word and lapped up every single delicious page of this enchanting, engrossing and thoroughly enjoyable tale of friendship, intrigue and passion. Lizzie is a terrific heroine – she is outrageous, feisty and strong, but she is also flawed, caring and so wonderfully believable that you’d just love to have her as your best friend. Nicola Cornick always creates wonderful heroes and Nat is no exception. He is charismatic, honorable, commanding and so utterly gorgeous women everywhere will want to him to sweep them off their feet!
Nicola Cornick consistently pens captivating stories which never fail to hold her readers in thrall and with every new release she continues to cement her position as one of the best writers of historical romance writing today!
