Review of Renegade by Sarah Parr
Jaline is a very intense, beautiful and mysterious young girl. She is a slave who has just been won in a Constantinople gambling den by English Captain Jonathon Barry. Jaline was orphaned young and propositioned by her English guardian who, in anger at her rejection, sold her into foreign slavery. She has learned that she can trust no one and she has to continually be on guard and use her wits to keep safe.
Jonathan’s father was a Duke who lost the family lands and titles. Jonathan’s goals are to regain the family wealth through trade and ultimately petition the King to regain the title. He has done well accumulating wealth by sometimes tricky means of trading! From the moment he sees the defiant Jaline he is intrigued and wants her.
Although he has the right to claim her, Jonathan doesn’t want to force her to be his mistress. Jaline doesn’t know how to serve as a mistress but is determined to serve her new “master.” They dance around her “duties” and discover friendship and companionship.
Jonathan should focus on finding an acceptable society bride to help his bid to regain the title. Instead he has become infatuated with the mysterious and aloof beauty who he “owns” but is unable to “possess” or control. Even though Jonathan thinks he should protect Jaline, she keeps coming to his rescue! Jaline wants Jonathan to succeed in society but she does not see how she can fit into his life. All the while as they are trying to sort out how their relationship may proceed, Jaline seems to keep attracting danger. It takes them a while to realize that Jonathan has an artifact that several nefarious people want and someone thinks Jaline may have some knowledge regarding the item.
The characters were well developed with good depth. The push and pull relationship between Jaline and Jonathan provides good tension. I really liked the style of writing in this book. It was almost terse but it worked well with the mystery. The book seemed to have a sense of darkness to it, perhaps because of the exotic nature and mystery shrouding Jaline and the artifact. The dark flavor provided an extra element of interest.
There are several twists and turns in the mystery and you want to keep reading to find out what is special about the artifact and who is willing to kill for it! The answer may not be who you expect!!
