Review: A Most Lamentable Comedy by Janet Mullany

"Written in the first person, A Most Lamentable Comedy is a rip-roaring hilarious Regency romp from the acerbic and deliciously witty pen of Janet Mullany!"

Lady Caroline Elmhurst, a former diamond of the first water, cannot believe that she’s sunk to such depths! There was a time when she was the darling of the Ton – and now she’s penniless and escaping in the middle of the night from dingy inns wearing all of her petticoats under her one respectable garment! Caroline is in dire need of a husband and she is determined to find one. It’s just a shame that Caroline’s reputation is not exactly wholesome! Her first husband, decades older than her, had died suddenly leaving her desperate for male companionship, whilst her second husband had spent all her money then left her alone and without two pennies to rub together. Now, considered a pariah by most of the Ton, Caroline must put her thinking cap on and try and find a way to gain a foothold in polite society again –and she is not going to give in until she achieves her objective. Luckily for her, she’s just been invited to a house party that’s just crawling with eligible bachelors…and her former lovers!

On her way to this house party, she meets Nicholas Congrevance, who seems to tick all of the right boxes: he’s charming, intelligent, devilishly attractive – and filthy rich! But little does Caroline realize that Nicholas is actually a crook who has been traveling across Europe seducing married women out of their clothes – and pocketing the contents of their reticules! After a jealous husband had violently disapproved of his actions, Nicholas decided to return to England to try his luck in his birthplace. When he spots Caroline, he thinks that he’s found another willing victim and he sets out to seduce her….

Caroline and Nicholas have got no idea about each other’s precarious financial situations. Thrown into close proximity together, Caroline and Nicholas soon realize that they are falling head over heels in love with one another. But does their relationship stand a chance of surviving amidst all these lies?

A Most Lamentable Comedy is the funniest book you’ll read all year! Janet Mullany’s wicked sense of humour will have your chortling and her witty, scandalous and thoroughly engrossing story will keep you gleefully turning the pages late into the night. Wonderfully written and engaging from start to finish, A Most Lamentable Comedy is a must-read for romance readers who like their Regencies with bite!
