Review: Darker Angels (The Black Sun’s Daughter, Book 2) by M. L. N. Hanover

"An abundance of supernatural quandaries, a touch of romance and a myriad of emotional issues have DARKER ANGELS being riveting throughout its entirety."

Many of the characters were met in the first book of The Black Sun’s Daughter series, and their lives become interwoven with some interesting new individuals during the telling of the second story. M.L.N. Hanover serves up an intriguing urban fantasy tale filled with fascinating characters and plenty of riveting scenarios.

When Jayne Heller receives a phone call from Karen Black, a former FBI agent, requesting help in New Orleans, she knows the call is related to the undertaking her deceased uncle started and is now being carried out by her. Jayne not only inherited vast wealth from her uncle, but she also discovered he wanted to rid our world of as many supernatural enemies as possible, beings she never knew existed. He had several men who helped him fight these predators, and now she and her versatile group travel to places to face the unknown.

After arriving in New Orleans, she learns more about a demonic serial killer who can switch bodies and is looking to add to its list, and Jayne plans to stop this spirit called a rider from harming anyone else. With the help of Karen who has fought this being before, she hopes to learn additional skills and become more proficient since all this supernatural fighting is so new to her. Before she is in the area for very long, Jayne comes to understand just how dangerous this latest opponent actually is and knows she must make the right decisions or much could be lost in this city where voodoo reigns and secrets abound. Although there are several pressing issues in her life plus the dynamics of her group continues to change, she remains determined to win in this confrontation with an enemy equally unyielding.

With its innovative beginning and detailed scenes thereafter, M.L.N. Hanover gives readers a story which will keep them entertained and wanting more. There are unfolding mysteries to be solved, and the disclosure of what is actually occurring is frequently shocking as unforeseen truths are learned. When one of these twists is thrown into the mixture, decisions often have to be made in a split-second as lives hang in the balance. Mr. Hanover keeps the suspense set on high, as one never knows when something unexpected will happen or who will be forced into a fight. DARKER ANGELS is a paranormal adventure featuring a heroine who discovers just what is expected of her as each new situation arises. With some of her reasoning not being the wisest, Jayne comes across as more lifelike because of her failings. However, she is definitely feisty as her unwavering determination is also clearly shown by her actions as she tries to correct an erroneous choice. There is a diverse group of men working with Jayne, each in their own specific way, and their inner personalities are divulged a little more with each new dilemma. Seeing their realistic reactions which are fueled by fear, concern or just plain instinct let me know what motivated them, while they also realized things about themselves. The New Orleans setting is vividly described, especially when it pertains to something relating to Katrina, giving much genuineness to the story. Some of the explanations about those who commit evil deeds and what drives them will have you wondering if this could truly be the rationale behind these inhuman acts. DARKER ANGELS is an urban fantasy packed with intense emotions, cleverly original escapades and an engaging group of characters.
