Review: The Midnight Effect by Pamela Fryer
This is a suspenseful debut novel with a cute kid, a beautiful lady in distress, a tortured hero and the added excitement of a paranormal element.
Lily Brent’s life is suddenly turned into a life threatening chase when she is asked to become guardian of a niece she didn’t know she had! Her estranged sister appears to have been murdered escaping a research facility where she had been for many years. Soon Lily and six year old Annie are on the run from the wealthy, controlling scientist who wants Annie back.
The story opens with Lily’s out of control car crashing into a remote mountain gas station and causing the pumps to explode in flames. The reclusive, retired cop, Miles Goodwin, has been hiding away in the mountains, physically and emotionally, since the death of his wife and small daughter. He is already angry with the battered lady who crawls out of the car with a small girl. But he gets really upset when she tries to steal his truck until he hears the sound of a silencer bullet zinging by his head! Then his training kicks into gear as he jumps into action to try to protect this obviously terrified woman and child.
Miles sure doesn’t want to be dragged out of his solitary existence but he has no choice when it appears that he is the only line of defense for Lily and Annie. As he tries to protect them until he can get them to proper authorities, he begins to realize that Annie is no normal child. She has never heard the sound of crickets outside, never played ball nor eaten a cheeseburger. Even more than that, she appears to him in the middle of the night when he knows she is in another bedroom sleeping!
I especially liked the traumatized character of Miles and his rising from depression to find love as a reason to live again! The romance is slow, sweet and the lovemaking sensually beautiful.
Annie’s unique skills add to the nonstop action to keep you turning pages to find out what is going on at the mysterious research facility where Annie was raised and how Miles and Lily are going to protect Annie. The settings are suitably detailed and the writing style crisp and flowing which suited the high speed action. I think this book is TOP Notch storytelling! I am looking forward to more books by Ms. Fryer!
