Claire Doolittle would have never believed her fun, carefree, sizzling sex-filled life with Jack would turn into SLEEPING WITH WARD CLEAVER. After many married years and five children; life is dull, predicable and boring. Every Sunday like clockwork Jack expects his weekly quickie no matter what crisis is going on or how unattractive Claire feels. All he wants, besides his Sunday do, is a well-run household without his effort, other than his constant nagging of the children and Claire. There has to be more to life than this; after all even Claire’s best friend is “getting it on” with Claire’s dim witted boss.
Eventually, Claire begins to suspect there is something going on with Jack when he discourages her from going with him on a business trip to exotic Miami. She becomes even more suspicious when she learns he is going with his new, young, attractive, personal assistant. Her self esteem bolstered by her reconnection with former lover, Todd the Toddster, via email; Claire decides to go to Miami incognito and find out just what is happening with Ward, I mean Jack, and his floozy assistant. Imagine Claire’s surprise when Todd also shows up and wants to rekindle their old flame. But the biggest surprise is seeing Jack all cozy with his flirty assistant and his reaction when he spies Claire with the Toddster!
What a fun read from the attention grabbing title, SLEEPING WITH WARD CLEAVER, to the final elevator scene; I was chuckling and agreeing with every word. How did Jenny Gardiner manage to “get it” so right and put married life into such hilarious perspective?! But you don’t have to be married to appreciate the humor and witty words of Ms. Gardiner. Her determined character, Claire, is a woman we can all recognize as she raises phoenix like from the “every-dayness” of life! For a fresh, funny, entertaining read; SLEEPING WITH WARD CLEAVER by award winning debut author Jenny Gardiner is sure to delight and amuse.
