Review: Blood Moon Rising by Angela Lam Turpin

"Valkyrie is trying to find a cure for her son Anthony who is a dampher, she is on a relentless pursuit to find his father before it is too late."

Valkyrie finds her son Anthony shaking with fever.  Although Valkyrie has been relentless in trying to find a cure for her son, it has been difficult since he is a dhampir half human and half vampire. Seeking help from the sorceress, Valkyrie is instructed to find Anthony’s father who can cure him with his blood.

Valkyrie and Anthony begin their journey fighting emotional obstacles along the way.  Anthony feels betrayed by Valkyrie when she admits to him that his father maybe alive.  Valkyrie is torn as she has only wanted to protect Anthony and willingly sacrifices herself in order to do it.  As they enter the city and try to blend in, Valkyrie finds herself struggling with the differences between herself a vampire and Anthony who is half human. Anthony is fascinated watching the humans and pleas with his mother, Valkyrie, to let him make friends and try new things.

Anthony and Valkyrie’s relationship begins to strain as Anthony becomes more independent and Vlakyire continues to try to protect him. An unfortunate twist leaves Valkyrie seeking help from Mr. James whom she met on one of her outings trying to find the boy’s father.  Mr. James  makes her a deal that he will help where her boy is concerned, if she  agrees to his bargain.  Unfortunately, Valkyrie’s problems go from bad to worse until she lands in the arms of Bill. Bill feels compelled to help Valkyrie with her son as well as give her an understanding to what it is like to be human. An emotional battle leaves Valkyrie torn between what she wants and what is right.

Blood Moon Rising is an interesting twist to your standard vampire tale. You are sympathetic to Valkyrie and her desire to be a good mother, even though at times she crosses the line. One of the most attention-grabbing areas in this book was Valkyrie learning how to be more human.  I really enjoyed Angel Lam Turpin’s take on this, it was very refreshing and thought provoking.  For paranormal readers; Blood Moon Rising is an intriguing tale you will be sure to like.
