Review: A Highlander Christmas by Janet Chapman

"A HIGHLANDER CHRISTMAS is frequently filled with poignant realism interwoven with the enchanting magic of the holiday season."

This may be the seventh book in the Highlander Series, but there is never a lack of originality or compelling scenes featuring the dynamic couple and numerous colorful characters. Janet Chapman brings the continuing saga of the MacKeage family to life with a magical story about the realities of love and life.

The parents of Camry MacKeage are not at all pleased when Luke Pascal comes to their home and tells them some unsettling news. It seems their daughter, whom they believed was still working as a NASA physicist, has actually left her prestigious vocation and is now a dog-sitter. Luke is a scientist from France, and he had e-mailed the American physicist for a long period until she quit replying. Since he thought they could possibly work together on a project, he decided to visit and was disheartened when he discovered she had disappeared.

When they learn their daughter is living in a coastal area of Maine, her mother persuades Luke to go and convince Camry to return home and celebrate the winter solstice with family as is tradition. He truly does not want this task, but guilt over an undisclosed confession has him traveling to the quaint town where he meets up with the intriguing woman and her loveable dogs. With the celebration quickly approaching, Luke comes to realize a miracle may be needed in order to talk Camry into going home for the holidays,

For a totally captivating story, Janet Chapman never disappoints. Her romances are overflowing with warmth, and readers will repeatedly discover humorous moments tossed into the mix when least expected. This leads to scenes where every instant is enjoyable on some level, and these incidents may even profoundly influence your own responses from time to time. Your every emotion will be affected at some point in A HIGHLANDER CHRISTMAS, as one set of circumstances may leave you chuckling while another may bring a tear to your eyes. The premise behind this story is creative, and the supernatural aspects are inventive. Ms. Chapman vividly shows how the winter season, with the help of a little magic, can become a time of enchantment if you only believe in miracles. By the end of the story, I certainly wanted each fascinating detail to have been based on actuality as this would make life much more interesting. The characters of Luke and Camry are extremely appealing, and their verbal battles are entertainingly engaging. Several of their conversations are packed with intelligently witty banter, many of which left me smiling. Their ability to emotionally pick up on the thoughts of the other is often shown through heartfelt scenes, and these grabbed my own feelings on many occasions. The power of love is illustrated differently in the lives of these two, every so often with humor and even with a touch of suspense, yet their actions comes across as sincere whether they actually give voice to their inner feelings. With the likable cast of secondary characters adding much to the story, there is never a dull scene at any time. With imagination and enthrallment, A HIGHLANDER CHRISTMAS will charm and delight readers.
