Review: Puckheads by Sue Swift
Zoë Whipple is dismayed to learn that her partner Henri Sebastien signed a contract with the Portland Thunder, a hockey team. Her partner died but the contract stands and Zoë is forced to honor the contract and produce a film about the Thunder’s upcoming season with the Stanley Cup as their goal. The team is filled with many different personalities and Daniel “Crash” Crasseau, the team captain, is among them. He feels that if he claims her as his the rest of the team will leave her alone. The only problem is that Zoë is not buying it. Her job is to document the season not to find romance. Zoë finds so much more as her investigation reveals many issues prevalent in sports, from drug use to groupies. The only problem is that her documentary is bringing in more attention than anyone anticipated. Winning is the goal and anyone who stands in the way could be fair game.
Sue Swift gives us detailed view of life with a professional hockey team. On the road or at home, the players face pressures to win and to love. For some, help is need to be successful while others try to succeed without help, but for some, winning is the final goal and nothing or no one can stand in the way. Zoë is an excellent heroine, highly principled and very talented. Daniel is a very sexy, gifted player and is determined to win for his coach, but personal issues plague the team and they may not make it to the playoffs. Will they succeed in their goals or will they fall short? Danger is threatening Zoë and it may be only Daniel who can help her. The ending was beautifully done and kept us guessing. Puckheads is another pleasurable read from Sue Swift.
