Review: To Desire a Devil by Elizabeth Hoyt
Beatrice Corning is living the life of an gentile English Lady. She has become the hostess for her widowed uncle the Earl of Blanchard. While Beatrice believes she is now to old to marry and have a family of her own, she is content with her life. That is until a ghost crashes into her home and life.
Reynaud St. Aubyn, Viscount Hope, has been thought to be dead these past seven years after being taken hostage by Indians while fighting the French in the Colonies. Now he staggers sick and weak into the home of his ancestors, the Earl of Blanchard’s home.
While Blanchard would like to have nothing to do with the mad man who, maybe rightfully, should have his title, Beatrice insists that they must take care of him. Unknown to Reynaud, she has been dreaming of him for years from the image she has from the portrait of him that has been in the house since she arrived. Now the man in front of her is not the laughing young man in the portrait, but a scarred and angry man who has been changed by war. They must work together to uncover the traitor who sold out Reynaud’s unit to the French.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is the kind of story that could be set in multiple time frames around war throughout history. Yet the characters are well developed and relatable. The quest for the truth around what really happened when the soldiers were ambushed and who could be the traitor really drives this story as well as being the common thread throughout the series.
As the last of Ms. Hoyt’s “The Legend of the Four Soldiers” series, I do think this is a time when it is important to fully understanding the story that you have read the previous works in the series. Don’t worry all of those are good books as well and you can find the reviews for all of them on the Single Titles website.
Enjoy.
