Review: Fugitive: The Cat Star Chronicles #5 by Cheryl Brooks
The fifth book in the Cat Star Chronicles is just as gratifying as all the previous installments, as the hero is hotly sexy and passions rise to immeasurable heights. Cheryl Brooks continuously lets her particular brand of wit and passion be evident throughout FUGITIVE, making this story totally satisfying.
When Earthling Drusilla Chevrault is offered a trip to Barada Seven which is reported to have various birds, the wildlife artist decides to accept and plans to get much painting done on this extended vacation. While she finds the planet to be rather behind the times in many areas, it is full of wildlife and believes she can find countless subjects to paint while also relaxing. What she did not expect to find is an exceedingly intriguing man, one who grabs her entire attention from the moment she spies him hiding in the jungle.
After his home planet of Zetith was destroyed, Manx managed to escape becoming a slave and has been on the run, specifically from Nedwut bounty hunters. Although his feline genetic makeup has helped him to survive in the wilds of this peace-loving planet, he knows those pursuing him could unexpectedly show up and must take careful precautions at all times. However, when he sees the newest visitor to stay in the lake house, he wants to forget about being cautious and get the attention of this fascinating female. While Manx and Drusilla may seem fated to be together, those nasty Nedwuts can only see the money capturing a Zetithian could bring them and make plans to find one soon.
For stories with distinctive characters and an abundance of fervent passions, Cheryl Brooks never fails to deliver. Toss in carefully crafted otherworldly settings where the locale and inhabitants come alive, and the reader is always rewarded with compelling scenes. Ms. Brooks definitely has an extremely vivid imagination, as her visions of how other planets and their diverse local citizens might look come across as brilliantly colorful. From the native birds in this story to the plain-speaking Zef, each one seems as though they could actually exist outside our world. The dialogue is repeatedly engrossing as the sharp wit and clever retorts will leave you chuckling, especially when a subject is discussed in a comical manner yet those conversing seem so sincere. When it comes to the main couple, Manx and Drusilla, they are memorable for the way they react to each other from the very first, as their fantasy thoughts are priceless. When they finally do meet and let their relationship build, the pages start sizzling with enough heat to start several fires. Though many of their scenes are brimming with steamy sensuality, there are also some emotionally intense moments between them, thus making their natures seem very convincing. There is much tender caring felt by these two for the other, and this compassion is shown through their actions on numerous occasions. By the end of the story, a number of previous characters are featured and their presence makes the story doubly entertaining. FUGITIVE is an originally innovative futuristic romance packed with love and laughter.
