Review: The Truth about Lord Stoneville (Hellions of Halstead Hall) by Sabrina Jeffries

"THE TRUTH ABOUT LORD STONEVILLE has the special brand of wit and passion for which Sabrina Jeffries is recognized, where each enthralling scene will thoroughly capture your imagination."

Though you have met Oliver Sharpe, the Marquess of Stoneville, before, you have never been privy to his inner emotional state until his own fascinating story. In the first book of Hellions of Halstead Hall, there are shocking revelations and an abundance of emotive issues to keep the reader riveted to every compelling aspect. Sabrina Jeffries draws you into this noteworthy start of a historical series overflowing with particularly likable characters and intriguingly original circumstances.

Their lives have been deeply influenced by a past family scandal, as the five Sharpe siblings are often talked about behind their backs and rumors just will not die. As the oldest, Oliver became the Marquess of Stoneville when their parents both died one night, and his Gran believes the time has come for him to take his title seriously and quit being irresponsible. To get her way, the devious woman gives her five grandchildren a shocking ultimatum to wed within the year or there will be no future compensation for them. Oliver knows it is up to him to stop this unreasonable scheme, and he puts an equally calculating plan into motion to find a fiancée.

While at a brothel in London to locate an unsuitable fiancée which his Gran would never accept, he meets the determinedly out-spoken Maria Butterfield, and his life will never be the same. The American woman has traveled to London to find her fiancé who has not responded to her latest letters, and although she does not find the missing man, she does get a proposition from an English gentleman visiting the brothel to become his pretend fiancée for a short time. Accepting his offer seems like the only way to get out of a sticky situation, so Maria finds herself acting like the future wife of the Marquess of Stoneville, a reputed rake. However, her insightful nature has her understanding the reasons behind many of Oliver’s actions, yet he believes he can only feel lust for the tempting woman and a battle of wills ensues.

Sabrina Jeffries is a master of images and dialogue. Whether a scene is giving a vivid picture of a locale and its surroundings or the characters are having conversations pertinent to England in the 1820’s, each one transports the reader to a moment in this time period which seems entirely plausible and definitely probable. The dialogue is engrossing during every conversation and not at all difficult to understand, as Ms. Jeffries makes certain there are enough descriptions in the exchanges to tell you exactly what topic is being discussed. With much cleverly delivered banter by various characters all throughout the story, readers will be repeatedly chuckling and certainly smiling. THE TRUTH ABOUT LORD STONEVILLE is memorable from the very start, as this adventure of the heart is filled with poignant emotions. Oliver is an especially unforgettable hero, as he has so much to overcome before he can ever be truly happy. When fate has him crossing paths with Maria, their scenes together will frequently touch your heart as your every emotion comes into play from their sincerely portrayed responses. The passion between these two is palpable from their first look, and heated desires are blazingly fervent when control is lost. The whole storyline is brilliantly executed, and the appealing secondary characters are a double treat. There are more books to come in the Hellions of Halstead Hall series, and I am absolutely thrilled! THE TRUTH ABOUT LORD STONEVILLE is enjoyably spellbinding with entertaining humor, passionate encounters and realistically depicted historical details.
