Review: Megan – Carole Llewellyn

"In the grand tradition of Iris Gower and Catrin Collier comes a stirring, tender and emotional saga, set in early twentieth century Wales and Bristol, from a wonderful new saga writer: Carole Llewellyn!"

With her father on his deathbed, her mother out of her mind with worry and next to no money to keep her large family clothed and fed, sixteen year old Megan Williams realizes that it’s up to her to provide for her family and to ease her mother’s substantial burden. But finding a job in Wales at the beginning of the century is not an easy task. Doors keep being slammed in Megan’s face and despair continues to trouble the Williams household until help comes from an unlikely source: her evil cousin, Lizzie.

Lizzie has been working in Bristol for the past few years at Redcliffe House as a maid and she has just informed Megan of a vacancy which has arisen at the residence of the rich Fothergill family. Megan is ecstatic that she has finally managed to find a way via which she can provide for her family, but she cannot help but be apprehensive about her cousin Lizzie’s motives. Lizzie has always resented Megan and had bullied her dreadfully as a child, so why is she being so helpful all of a sudden? Has Lizzie truly turned over a new leaf? Or is there something more insidious behind her helpful proposal?

Although skeptical about her cousin’s real reason behind her generous suggestion, Megan has no other choice but to leave her family behind in Wales and to begin anew working for the Fothergills at Redcliffe House. On her arrival, Megan is stunned by the warm welcome which the other servants give her – unlike her cousin, who makes her displeasure at having Megan close by blatantly clear from the off. However, Lizzie needs Megan and she is going to manipulate her cousin and exploit her naiveté and her innocence. Lizzie has got her eyes set on being a companion to the lady of the house and thus be free of Harold Fothergill, the eldest son’s, lecherous and perverted desires. And Lizzie plans to use Megan as bait in order for Harold to slake his desires and thus leave Lizzie alone.

As Lizzie puts her plan into action, Megan finds herself frightened and alone. Although, her every instinct compels her to leave Redcliffe House, she knows that she must endure the misery and pain of Harold’s abuse if she is to give her family peace of mind. But amidst all the cruelty which she must face at the hands of her abuser, Megan finds solace in her friendship with Harold’s brother, Robert, with whom she has fallen head over heels in love.

But does their love have any hope of a future when a vast social chasm divides them?

Fast-paced, evocative and wholly absorbing, Megan is the entrancing debut novel from this spellbinding new writer of historical romantic fiction. Imbued with drama, intensity and emotion and featuring a strong, independent and smart heroine, Megan is guaranteed to delight and enchant readers who enjoy well-written and captivating romantic sagas!
