Review: Pleasure of a Dark Prince (The Immortals After Dark) by Kresley Cole
The Immortals After Dark series has a winning installment with its ninth book, where suspense is nonstop and emotions are repeatedly in turmoil. Kresley Cole is incomparable when it comes to bringing realism into her innovative worlds, as anything can happen with unexpected results.
When a goddess gave Lucia the choice to become an immortal Valkyrie in exchange for being kept alive, she was given the archery skill to become a great huntress plus be responsible for keeping a merciless being held captive using her extraordinary talent. She also is to remain chaste or her abilities will go away, so being an archer has become her whole life. Many years have passed with all going well, and her current assignment has Lucia crossing paths with Garreth MacRieve, Prince of the Lykae.
From the instant the Highlander senses his destined female is near, Garreth cannot believe his dream of having a mate may finally come true. While she is attracted to the brawny man, becoming anyone’s mate and especially to a stubborn werewolf is not what Lucia has planned for her future. What ensues is almost like a game of whether he can catch up with her or not. Unfortunately, Lucia knows there will shortly be much danger coming into her life, and she does not need any diversions from her upcoming mission. Even though Garreth cannot understand why Lucia tries to constantly avoid him, he will do anything to protect his mate when he realizes danger is closing in on her.
The exceptional writing abilities of Kresley Cole make the reader believe in every fascinating detail of her superb stories. There are a myriad of paranormal elements to captivate with their convincingness, and those involving beloved characters leave you wanting them to actually exist in our world. And if the more deplorable beings created by Ms. Cole should happen to live amongst us, too, then I definitely want a brave Lykae and Valkyrie couple like Garreth and Lucia around. Although there have been glimpses of these two before, as several of The Immortals After Dark books run concurrently, not a lot of insight was divulged about the man who is a werewolf prince or the woman who is an archer of unequaled skill. However, with their own story here at last, the truth is revealed about two beings whose lives are completely dissimilar yet destiny has much in store for them to face together. From unforeseen danger and intrigue to sky-high emotional tension, the lives of this couple are never easy from the moment they first meet, and many of the situations are fueled by the potent sexual awareness between them. Some of the escapades which surround them are rather amusing, and Ms. Cole delights with plenty of clever banter and sharp comebacks during these moments. Then there are the numerous heart-stopping dilemmas, where you will be holding your breath until the outcome is reached. As danger plagues this daring pair, the suspense builds as each new set of circumstances arises. When it comes to the love life of Garreth and Lucia, single-minded persistence comes to mind, as a werewolf is not going to give up on making his chosen mate his own. And this leads to some steamy scenes when combustible heat overrides their control. Every emotion of the reader will be played upon during this story, and the ending will only leave you desperate for the next book. PLEASURE OF A DARK PRINCE is a magical romantic adventure overflowing with humor, passion and shocking twists.
