Review: Wicked Becomes You by Meredith Duran
Adventurous and often daring scenarios arise throughout WICKED BECOMES YOU, and spontaneous impulses forever change lives in an instant. Meredith Duran proves her storytelling skills are superb in this captivating historical romance, where desires and practicality frequently clash with unexpected results.
From a young age, Gwen Maudsley was taught how to be a future wife for a man with excellent standing in society, preferably with a title. She did everything exactly as her parents planned, yet failed twice in attempts to marry as her two fiancés left her before they could say “I do”. It has been her dream to get married and finally be part of a real family, as everyone in her immediate family has died. However, after being walked out on twice by men she hoped to marry, Gwen is tired of being seen as respectable and always agreeable as these qualities have not helped fulfill her wishes. She believes it is time to please herself, even if it means occasionally being a little wicked.
When Gwen makes this decision to dramatically change her life, she thinks Alexander Ramsey would be the perfect man to help her. Alex was the best friend to her deceased brother, and his reputation as a scoundrel is exactly the way of life from which she wants to learn in order to enjoy her own existence. Although he does not really believe she is serious about following him to observe sights she has never before seen, circumstances lead to them both being in Paris at the same time. Although they have been acquaintances for many years where desirous feelings have been kept secret by him, Gwen is now the one who is ready to take their friendly relationship to a more intimate level.
Compellingly exceptional writing enriches any story by Meredith Duran. Every development enhances the main storyline, while all characters add something meaningful when they are featured. Ms. Duran repeatedly creates atypical circumstances for her main characters to face, thus making her stories uniquely original. In WICKED BECOMES YOU, there are visits to unusual places where every aspect comes alive through extremely colorful descriptions. Any setting is meticulously and vividly depicted, and the thorough research done by the author of period details is masterfully portrayed. Your attention is repeatedly captured by the wide variety of innovative occurrences cropping up, some of which will leave you laughing and others cause your heart to break with empathy. Alex and Gwen seem nothing alike at the start of the story, and these differences make for countless entertaining conversations plus responses. Their verbal exchanges are regularly filled with clever wordplay, and it was especially delightful getting to see how Gwen would respond to the more risqué ones spoken by Alex. Several of the inner discussions they had with themselves gave much insight into their true natures and not the persona revealed to the world. Stories where two people believe there is no way they could ever have a lasting relationship is always a favorite, and Ms. Duran expertly pulls off this theme with proficiency. These two definitely have an abundance of sexual chemistry between them, and any intimacy is expressed with heated passions yet also sincere genuineness. There are a couple of turns which are unforeseen, and these events stun yet help make sense of past happenings by clearing up some remaining questions. WICKED BECOMES YOU enthralls with particularly likable characters and a heartwarming romance with deeply affecting emotions.
