Review: Sing As We Go by Margaret Dickinson
Kathy Burton yearns to escape the stuffy confines of the family farm and her father’s overbearing disciplinary methods, but she is always held back from running away by concern for her vulnerable mother, Edith. However, when Kathy’s father raises his hand to her, she realizes that she’s had enough and goes to the Robinson family, her next door neighbours, and asks for their help in aiding her escape from her father’s tyrannical rule.
The Robinsons have always been fond of Kathy and had in fact hoped that, one day, she might marry their son, Morry, but when they hear of Kathy’s dilemma and of her desire to get as far away from her father as possible, they arrange for her to go and live in Lincoln with their relative, Jemima Robinson. Although, Kathy is sad to leave behind her friends and her mother, she knows that escaping from her home is the only option open to her, so she packs her bags and prepares for a new life in the city.
Kathy is welcomed with open arms by Jemima, a kindly spinster whose no-nonsense exterior belies a generous and warm spirit. Jemima soon gets Kathy a job in a department store and the naïve farm girl finds herself having to adapt to working in an environment of glamour, sophistication and elegance – a million miles away from the drudgery of farm life! Kathy immediately impresses her superiors and makes friends with her fellow co-workers. However, little does she know that she’s also impressed the rich, handsome and debonair manager Tony Kendall…
Swept away by Tony’s charm and good looks, Kathy thinks that she has finally found the love of her life. But Tony’s devious mother, Beatrice, is not going to let her only son marry a common shop girl. When she succeeds in driving the two of them apart, Kathy finds herself alone and afraid, but determined not to let Beatrice get the better of her.
Deciding that she cannot possibly stay in the city to be reminded of what she has lost, Kathy packs her bags and leaves Lincoln. However, her love for Tony shows no sign of abating, but will she ever be reunited with the man she loves more than life itself?
From Margaret Dickinson’s mesmerizing pen comes a compelling, beguiling and poignant wartime romance that will tug at your heartstrings and keep you engrossed until the very last sentence! Margaret Dickinson writes with plenty of charm and heart, and after devouring Sing As We Go, readers everywhere will be counting the days until the next release by this outstanding writer of historical sagas!
