Review: A Highlander Never Surrenders by Paula Quinn
Paula Quinn is a master storyteller and her gifted skill stands out in each enchanting scene of this breathtaking story. From the first intriguing paragraph to the last stunning disclosure, Ms. Quinn takes a factual period in Scottish history and turns it into a most fascinating tale of imagined possibilities.
Scotland during 1659 is experiencing political discord with England. There is also much rebellion among its own people, making it exceedingly difficult to know who can be trusted. One Scottish insurgent is Claire Stuart, a woman who has been trained by her brother to fight with deadly accuracy using a sword. When she is waylaid by those whose views are different from her own, she is facing an uncertain future until two men help to rescue her. One of the men is Graham Grant, a commanding Highlander who rubs her the wrong way from the start yet she cannot seem to get him out of her mind.
Claire had planned to retrieve her sister from a suspected enemy on her own, but she finds Graham is equally determined to help her and nothing she does seems to deter the exasperating man. Her surprising fighting skills and feisty nature have him intrigued from the instant they met, and after one heated kiss, he cannot walk away from her. Although her continued undertaking to discover exactly who is a betrayer is a risky one plus he does not fully believe all her accusations, Graham finds himself willing to assist Claire while he secretly longs for her to surrender to him in every way.
The books of Paula Quinn are remarkably notable for their intricate way of combining historical facts with a captivating romance, and the resulting stories are always memorable. With original concepts and distinctive characters, the stories of Ms. Quinn remind me of the early work by one of my favorite authors of all times, Julie Garwood. There is intelligent banter repeatedly between the hero and heroine of this story, as Graham and Claire find themselves facing a multitude of issues which will have each of them doing some intense soul-searching. Their conversations are particularly convincing, and these exchanges are extremely heartfelt plus filled with sharp wit or sincere feelings. Whether the scene is overflowing with sexual desire or depicting persistent determination, their emotions clearly come through. The fervent yearning between these two is sky-high, and, the moment is explosively passionate when they finally follow their hearts. Graham and Claire are a couple about whom I came to care deeply, and their welfare and what the future held for them became important to me. As for the suspenseful action and secretive mysteries in the story, Ms. Quinn is unparalleled when it comes to keeping the reader riveted. There is a sense of being right in the heart of the battle, as each aspect is shown with visually realistic details. Also, my own anticipation built with each new revelation, and these disclosures left me feeling as though I was actually reading about history in the making. There are numerous past characters playing a vital role during many of the scenes, and the new ones added much to the account, making me look forward to the next Scottish warrior’s story. A HIGHLANDER NEVER SURRENDERS is an innovative and unforgettable love story which will fill your dreams and touch your heart.
