Review: Out of Time by Samantha Graves
For her second romantic suspense book, Samantha Graves pulls out all the stops by creating an exceptionally original story where the action never slows and choices must be hastily made. The dynamic couple featured in this story face suspenseful situations while also discovering much about their inner feelings and desires.
Though Simon Bonner has been a tomb raider for many years, he is ready to give it up for a more mundane yet safe life. Unfortunately, he cannot even get one good night of sleep before trouble once again enters his life. It seems his ex-wife has been kidnapped, and he is given a mission to complete or she will die. He receives a rock crystal lens which is part of the key to unearthing a legendary treasure in Mexico. Simon is also given the name of a woman who is supposed to be able to lead him to the hidden archives by using the lens.
As a museum curator, Jillian Talbot can indulge in her love of history by taking care of many priceless artifacts. She does have a secret which enhances her experiences at the museum, as she can see related events from the past when looking at an object. When she is accosted one night after work, Jillian believes it has something to do with her family’s shady past until another man comes to her rescue. She soon finds herself and this intriguing man on the run from dangerous men and on their way to Mexico. Although Jillian has a different opinion from Simon as to how their task should be carried out and what should happen if they actually discover the archives, they realize building trust between them is essential or they may not live to complete their quest.
Samantha Graves takes suspenseful yet romantic stories to new heights with her cleverly imaginative plots. Readers will be quickly immersed in the innovative world crafted for her interesting characters, as these well-portrayed individuals become involved in numerous escapades. OUT OF TIME starts off in a suspenseful way and the threatening danger fuels the urgency of the circumstances surrounding Simon and Jillian. The pace never slows as this couple continuously tries to outwit those responsible for making them participate in a cat and mouse game. There is much mystery to their mission with so many unknowns, plus there are even several unanticipated developments which are completely shocking when finally revealed. Ms. Graves proves her outstanding storytelling abilities with every page turned, as this enthralling novel comes alive with totally convincing ingenious scenes and memorable characters. Each person in the story plays their part to the fullest, whether they are courageously good or just plan greedy and scheming, and a number of secondary characters are extraordinarily delightful. Simon and Jillian believe they have very dissimilar values and principles, but they come to some surprising conclusions when they are forced to work together for one major goal. Seeing these two take uncharacteristic risks made them all the more genuine and caused my own connection to them to become even stronger. The intimacy between these two is heartfelt from the sincerity they express through reactions and thoughts. OUT OF TIME is remarkably notable with its creative interweaving of peril, mystery, humor and unforgettable characters.
