Review: Faceless by Debra Webb
The intricate nature of this story increases the tension as numerous unknowns gradually come to light. With every new revelation, Debra Webb weaves the yet unsolved issues more deeply into the lives of her hero and heroine to create a gripping thriller.
At first, it seems as though Carson Tanner will finally have some closure about the senseless killing of his family many years ago. A known killer has confessed, been convicted and will now be spending the rest of his life in prison. However, the one burning question still remains and he cannot forget until he receives the reason for why his family was murdered. As the deputy district attorney, Carson knows how to get answers and he finds himself caught up in trying to discover the actual facts before he can finally move on in his life.
When the lives of Annette Baxter and his own unexpectedly cross paths one night, Carson is later stunned to find out she is directly involved in his latest case about a suspected criminal with whom she is associated. He learns the woman whom he cannot get out of his mind helps the influential people in Birmingham by causing their wrongdoings to vanish if she receives proper payment. After a difficult childhood, Annette now lives a much better life by profiting from the secrets she keeps. Unfortunately, these same secrets have brought trouble into her life as someone wants to make certain their past is never revealed. Carson and Annette do not trust each other, yet they find themselves working together to uncover the truth.
Debra Webb knows how to capture the reader by crafting dynamic characters who face formidable scenarios. Whether the problem is merely on an emotional level or a more lethal dilemma, Ms. Webb keeps the pace moving and the tricky circumstances escalating. In FACELESS, continuous questions arise about present situations plus those in the past, and the correlation between the two periods is shown through cleverly depicted scenes. Carson has lived with the murder of his family overshadowing his whole adult life, and just when he believes he has the answers he has been seeking, more troubling questions crop up. Ms. Webb interweaves several intriguing incidents which frequently turn the plot toward unexpected directions, ones constantly puzzling and often threatening. The interaction between Annette and other characters leaves the reader wondering exactly what her inner motivations are and if she is really unfeeling as portrayed. As the story develops, the relationship between Carson and Annette is an unusual one, as they both find themselves wanting the truth for unpredicted reasons. There are a myriad of suspects in this story with new ones added into the mix over time. With clues galore and disclosures being spoken, the reader will be ceaselessly speculating as to what is in fact happening and who is behind the cover-ups. FACELESS is packed with revelations and interesting characters to create a thrilling story of intrigue.
