Review: THE NIGHT BIRD by Catherine Asaro

Markus can not live without Allegra and decides that the captivating woman should become his queen so he takes her to meet his half-brother, the atajazid, for his approval. Meanwhile, Allegra overhears a plot that will put her homeland in danger. She plans her escape using her mage powers. Leaving Markus is difficult for Allegra but she can not survive in such a harsh environment where women are considered less than animals.
Catherine Asaro vividly describes the varying landscapes and peoples of the countries of the lost continent, from the lush greenness of Aronsdale to the arid bleakness of Jazid. In comparison, the people of these countries are just as different. The Aronsdale people are fair, gentle and compassionate with men and women being treated equally. The Jazid however, are dark rugged warriors and women are considered property, less than a horse in importance. With this background, Ms. Asaro tells a tale rich in enchantment, danger and romance. Once captured by THE NIGHT BIRD, the reader will find it hard to put this breathtaking book down.
