REVIEW: THE WILD CARD by BETH ELLIOTT

"The Wild Card is the terrific debut novel by a wonderful new voice in Regency romance: Beth Elliott."

Unlike the other girls of the ton, Miss Kitty Towers would much rather spend her time helping the poor, than idling her life away shopping, gossiping and chasing husbands. Determined never to marry, Kitty is stubborn in her resolve to champion the cause of the less fortunate, much to her poor mother’s dismay, who would love nothing more than to see her daughter wed to a wealthy gentleman who could rescue the family from the financial doldrums.

Luckily for Mrs. Towers, fate seems to be on her side for she gets a letter from her estranged elderly relative, Lady Picton, summoning Kitty to spend a season with her in London, where she would be introduced to society’s most eligible bachelors. Reluctantly tearing herself away from the plight of the poor, Kitty, accompanied by her best friend Amelia, finds herself whisked off to London, her mother’s desires to see married ringing in her ears.

On her arrival, Kitty encounters a taciturn-looking gentleman who doesn’t look too happy about being disturbed. It seems only logical for this man to punish Kitty with a tempting kiss that leaves her breathless, much to her dismay. This stranger’s shocking kiss might have awakened feelings in her which she had thought non-existent, but Kitty is still determined never to wed – even though she cannot get the unexpected kiss out of her mind!

Whisked away by all the glamour, fun and opulence of polite society, Kitty soon begins to enjoy herself – and to enjoy the attentions which the handsome Frenchman, Etienne Saint-Aubin, has been heaping on her. A great favourite of her aunt, Etienne is charming, sensitive and devastatingly attractive, but there’s something about him, something Kitty cannot put her finger on, which rankles Kitty and which makes her suspicious of his motives.

As if Kitty didn’t have enough to worry about, she soon comes face to face with the man she’s been trying – but failing – to forget: Theo Weston. Having been injured in the war, Theo Weston has enough to contend with without having a spirited debutante like Kitty constantly on his mind! The target of many a matchmaking mama, Theo usually steers clear of chits like Kitty. But Kitty is a young woman who is pretty hard to ignore…

Theo is not best pleased that Kitty seems to have set her sights on Etienne Saint-Aubin. The Frenchman may have charmed polite society, but Theo is not convinced and he’s determined to show her that the man is dangerous. But will Kitty believe him? And will her resolve never to marry ever weaken enough for her to accept that Theo is the man for her?

The Wild Card is an enjoyable Regency tale imbued with plenty of wit, gusto, flair, charm and warmth! A sparkling tale of danger and romance, The Wild Card is an unmissable treat for Regency fans everywhere!
