Review: Tall Tales and Wedding Veils by Jane Graves
In Jane Graves’ riotously funny love story, Tall Tales and Wedding Veils, we meet Heather Montgomery, an unmarried 29 year old CPA who is the perennial bridesmaid, but never the bride in her large extended family. Heather, a bridesmaid this time for her vainglorious cousin, wears a size 14, but is being stuffed into a dress a size too small, and is told to lose weight for the dress to fit because there is not enough fabric to let the dress out to fit her. Resigned to a month of celery sticks and water, Heather goes to a local “watering spot”, McMillan’s, to meet her girlfriend to share her woes about the dress, and the necessity of going to Las Vegas for the weekend with the bride and bridesmaids for a pre-wedding weekend of frivolity.
Tony McCaffrey is in a good mood while sipping his beer at McMillan’s. His plans to purchase the night club have all fallen in place, and come Monday the very chair he was sitting on, and everything else, would belong to him. Heather and her friend sit commiserating with each other, and both notice the handsome Tony sitting at the bar talking to a friend. Heather has had a crush on Tony for a long time, but Tony has never noticed her. Tony’s day suddenly hits the pits when his friend tells him that he is not able to loan him the promised $20,000 to finalize the club’s purchase. Tony decides to go to Las Vegas hoping that Lady Luck might smile on him. Heather goes hoping that she will at least survive spending the weekend with the gorgeous bride and bridesmaids. Heather finds a $10 dollar chip on the floor outside of her room, meets Tony who tells her his sob story, and Heather talks him into letting her try to win the money he needs with her “found” chip. One thing leads to another, and Heather actually wins the needed amount of money. Tony rents a limo, purchases champagne, and they both become inebriated. Waking up in bed together the next morning, both are horrified to discover that they are married.
The adventures really start as they return home, and try to make sense of their situation. Living together temporarily until a divorce is obtained, they work together to make McMillan’s a success, and soon genuine feelings are born for each other.
How Tony and Heather are able to live together, convince people that they are happy, and manage to make the bar a success is a tour-de-force of comedic hilarity. I adore this story. I laughed and cried all the way through this funny, yet moving tale of two people trying to find true love in the midst of lies, truths, and rotten house keeping. Please locate this book, and be prepared for a fabulous joy ride of adventures as 2 lost souls come together “for better, or worse”.
