Deputy John Timmons was in the right place at the right time when he stopped the lynching of a young boy accused of being a horse thief.  He took the frightened boy to the horse’s owner and worked out an agreement to pay the owner for his aggravation then brought the ragamuffin home to the 5T ranch to work off the debt.  John soon learns that the boy, Bert, is really a petite 17 year old girl running away from her dark past.  It isn’t long before the whole Timmons family is charmed by Ember, aka Bert, especially John.

Meanwhile, the Rocky Falls area is being plagued by cattle rustlers and Ember is suspected of helping them.  John and his family want to believe in her even if she won‘t tell them what she is running from.  However, the murders and stolen cattle make the ranchers nervous and even John starts to question his trust in the woman he is beginning to love.
