Review: Sophia’s Secret by Susanna Kearsley

"Richly woven, highly intricate and densely plotted, Susanna Kearsley’s long-awaited new novel, Sophia’s Secret, will stir the senses, touch your heart and leave you breathless!"

Best-selling author Carolyn McClelland has been in France for the last couple of months researching her latest historical novel. Carrie had thought that visiting the sights where most of her book is set, would help her gain a better understanding of the plot and the characters, but sadly inspiration failed to strike once more. Dejected and disappointed, Carrie realizes that some time away from her work might be just what she needs, so she packs her bags and goes to visit her best friend and agent, Jane, in Scotland.

On her way to see her friend, Carrie takes a wrong turn and is stunned when she finds herself drawn to the majestic ruins of Slains Castle. Carrie feels as if she’s somehow seen the place before, and is keen to explore this unfathomable connection which she has with a place which, to her knowledge, she’s never clapped eyes on. As luck would have it, a cottage close to the castle has just become vacant, and no sooner has Carrie set foot inside the derelict cottage, that she begins to hear the echo of a woman’s voice, desperate to tell Carrie her story. This voice in her ear soon begins to take shape in Carrie’s mind, and when she starts working on her novel, Carrie is stunned to see the woman coming to life on the page.

Knowing that one of her ancestors, Sophia Paterson, was alive in 1708, the time in which her novel is set, Carrie calls her main character after her and pretty soon, is left flabbergasted when she finds herself almost possessed by Sophia’s spirit and compelled to write down the story which this spirit is dictating to her. As Carrie delves deeper into the history of her ancestor, hoping to give her novel a more authentic flavour, she is stunned when she finds out that she does not need to do any research, for every single thing which Sophia’s spirit told her actually happened during the spring of 1708.

As the life of her fictional alter-ego gets more and more turbulent, Carrie’s own love life begins to go off the rails when two gorgeous Scotsmen begin to take an interest in her. Will Carrie choose the right men for her or is she destined to lead a life as riotous as that of her ancestor? And will she ever discover Sophia’s Secret?

Susanna Kearsley is the Daphne Du Maurier of her generation. Powerful, atmospheric, enthralling and simply mesmerizing, Sophia’s Secret is one of the best books you’ll read this year!
