Review: Fate of Camelot by Cynthia Breeding

"The quests and promises undertaken by dynamic characters make FATE OF CAMELOT instantly compelling and totally fascinating."

With determination and plenty of tenacity, the premise of this story is cleverly carried out by the many engaging characters in a most dramatic way. Cynthia Breeding gives her own special twists to the Arthurian Legends, and she skillfully brings this novel version to life with meticulous details and convincing dialogue.

After King Arthur is injured during a battle, it seems he can only be saved by going to Avalon. The presence of his wife, Gwenhwyfar, is needed for him to possibly be made well, so she travels with him to this magical land. Besides her anxiety for Arthur, she cannot help but wonder if she will ever be able to leave this area where faeries live and get back to Camelot. Also, Gwenhwyfar goes to Avalon because concern for her beloved homeland outweighs her personal desire to not leave Lancelot, the man she actually loves with her heart.

While the King hopefully recuperates, the unrest in Camelot only intensifies. Lancelot does what he can to keep uprisings from happening, but it is extremely difficult as more time passes. When his son and another knight begin a search for the Holy Grail, some hope its discovery will unite the warlords in the region. However, Gwenhwyfar does not return home and Lancelot discovers a plot to permanently keep the only woman he has ever loved in the Land of Faerie. It soon becomes apparent there are many quests to be taken before any of them can ever find what they really desire.

The innovative blending of history and fiction makes this story by Cynthia Breeding feel like it truly could have occurred. Ms. Breeding has a knack for creating stories where the line between real and imagined seems to disappear, and this book makes the reader believe they are reading an actual account of what happened in Camelot those many years ago. There are several quests and dreams being pursued during the telling of this story, and each one is captivating in its own right. Whether the tale is following a quest to find the Holy Grail or the characters are just trying to finally be with the one they in fact love, there is always plenty of emotion behind each pursuit. From the moment one is introduced to King Arthur, Gwenhwyfar or Lancelot, the reader is pulled into the personal lives of these dynamic individuals and comes to greatly care for them. As the story progressed and I saw what fate has in store for each of them, I was at times joyful and then sometimes distressed when they encountered what seemed like hopeless problems. Regardless of the scene, Ms. Breeding makes the moment believable with genuine emotions and realistic reactions. There is much soul-searching while these characters seek answers, and it was interesting to see what brought peace into their lives. FATE OF CAMELOT is packed with adventures, passion, unerring optimism and the mystical.

Cynthia Breeding is an amazing author. This is the second book in her Camelot series, Camelot Destiny being the first. I cannot wait for Prelude to Camelot, coming soon.
