Review: Border Lass by Amanda Scott
I knew as soon as I read the first sentence “He had been watching her most of the day” that Amanda Scott had written a fabulous story! This story so engages the reader that loss of sleep is a definite possibility. Border Lass is a love story to cherish, and an adventure story that will keep the reader in thrall until the stunning climax.
Amalie has gathered with her family members and a thousand other Scott’s on the snow covered shore of Loch Fitty for the Yuletide wedding of the daughter of the heir to Scotland’s Throne. The watcher of Amalie, Sir Garth Napier, noticed that she seemed intimidated by the crowds, and that “she appeared as a young doe who had wandered into a pack of wolves.” Sir Garth, watching a man apparently accost Amalie, intervened by knocking the man out, whereupon Amalie informed him that the man lying unconscious was her brother Simon! Abruptly retiring from the room, Sir Garth continues to watch over Amalie and actually follows her into a house where only the King’s men and male nobility were staying. Amalie was seeking shelter from meeting her mother who has been searching for her to introduce her to a possible suitor for her hand in marriage. Amalie has been serving as a Lady in Waiting to the Princess Isabel, and thus has been able to stay away from her marriage minded mother. Amalie has vowed to never marry, and is sincere in her feelings due to a terrible dark secret that she harbors. Sir Garth pulls Amalie away from a bedroom door where she was listening to find an empty room for shelter. What Amalie overhears is an apparent murder conspiracy before she is grabbed from behind, and carried away..by Sir Garth.
Following the overheard conversion there is genuine concern on Amalie’s part because she is unsure of who was speaking, and who was to perhaps be “gotten rid of”! Amalie has to continue in service to the princess, and finds herself in the company of Sir Garth, who valiantly tries to deny his feelings for Amalie until she is being forced to marry another man!
This is such a fabulous story, and it kept me in suspense until the final page. This is a story to cherish, and a keeper in the bookcase for re-reading often. I so enjoyed Sir Garth’s gentle care of Amalie, and his ability to protect her from harm, or mistreatment. There is another book being released soon in this series, and I cannot wait to read more about this fascinating time-period, and the people who inhabit this storyline. Amanda Scott is a fabulous author, and I am thrilled that I have “discovered” her!
Border Moonlight is being released in January 2009. I have already pre-ordered it!
