Review: Gold, Frankincense, and Murder by Barbara Early

"Barbara Early combines a sweet love story with the murder of an innocent man and creates a beautifully constructed suspense tale."

Donna Russell, a high school geometry teacher, volunteers at the local food bank. Neal is her handsome co-worker. Donna secretly dreams that their relationship might become more than friendship. Neal does not come to work at the food bank for two weeks and Donna becomes worried. Neal is usually reliable but he never called. Donna decides to drop by his apartment to check up on Neal. No one answers the door, but his handsome next door neighbor has his key. After a quick search of Neal’s rooms, Donna knows that he has not been home since the first day he missed work. When police recover the body of a murdered man from the Niagara River, Donna’s gut tells her that it is Neal. Using her deductive skills, Donna attempts to solve Neal’s murder. Neal’s handsome neighbor lends her a hand. Can she solve the mystery?

Handsome EMT Sam Holton was friends with Neal. The two bachelors looked out for each other. When Donna informs Sam of her belief that Neal may be the victim of foul play, he decides to help her. If Neal was murdered, Sam fears that Donna’s life might be in danger. Sam also wants to get to know the pretty schoolteacher better, so helping her allows him to spend time with her. Can Sam and Donna discover what really happened to Neal before the killer claims another victim?

Barbara Early combines a sweet love story with the murder of an innocent man and creates a beautifully constructed suspense tale. While Donna finds herself attracted to Sam, she does not trust him. After the police discover Neal’s body, Donna fears that Sam may know more than he should about Neal’s death. Sam understands Donna’s reservations, but he cannot allow her to go off on her own to investigate the murder. Will Donna be the next target of the murderer?
