Review: Gin & Tonic Mystery: Collared by L. A. Kornetsky

"In the first book of the Gin and Tonic series, L. A. Kornetsky takes two novices trying to be private investigators and tosses them into the deep end of the pool."

Ginny Mallard (Gin) and Teddy Tonica (Tonic) have a competitive relationship.  When they are not on opposing teams on Trivia night, they enjoy testing each other when they meet at Mary’s, where Teddy bartends.  Ginny is a dog person, taking her shar-pei, Georgie, everywhere she goes.  The bar has a cat named Mistress Penny who adopts Teddy.  She rides on his shoulders when it suits her.  When Ginny secures Georgie outside Mary’s, the shar-pei and Mistress Penny enjoy comparing notes about their humans.

Ginny runs a private concierge business.  Times are tough and she has bills to pay.  Ginny loves watching Teddy as he encourages patrons to talk to him while he tends bar.  He makes everyone feel comfortable enough to spill their secrets.  Ginny overhears one of the regulars tell Teddy that his uncle is missing along with important papers he needs to close a real estate deal.  Ginny offers to find his missing uncle…for a fee.  The customer agrees to hire Ginny on the spot.  When he leaves, however, Ginny realizes that she does not have the skills needed for this kind of investigation, but she knows someone who does: Teddy!

Teddy does not trust something about Ginny’s new client.  Against his better judgment, Teddy agrees to help her.  When they look into the man’s activities, however, strange things begin to happen.  Ginny gets threatening phone calls telling her to stop her investigation, intruders toss Ginny’s place looking for something, and dangerous characters follow Ginny and Teddy everywhere they go.

In the first book of the Gin and Tonic series, L. A. Kornetsky takes two novices trying to be private investigators and tosses them into the deep end of the pool.  As they get closer to their goal, they find themselves in life threatening situations that they barely get out of.  Their pets try to give them a push in the right direction, but sometimes humans ignore good advice.  The conversations between Georgie and Penny are almost as funny as the ones between Teddy and Ginny.  The author takes our heroes around every wrong turn possible for them to take and still accomplish their goal.  Even when they find the man they are looking for, the story is not over.  If you like your suspense with lots of humor, this is the perfect book for you.
