Review: Prime Time by Hank Phillippi Ryan

"Author, Hank Phillippi Ryan’s Charlie McNally mystery series opens with a smashing debut."

Charlotte, Charlie, McNally is an investigative reporter who is at the top of her field. She is looking for the “big story” to make her station successful in the November sweeps. A little insecure with her 40-something image, Charlie is afraid she will be replaced by a younger “Barbie” looking newsgirl. When assigned to interview the widow of Bradley Foreman, employed by Aztratech Pharmaceuticals, she gets asked a pertinent question off camera; why didn’t she respond to an email sent by Bradley a few days before her death? Now Charlie is intrigued; what could be so important about an email? Of course Charlie has to investigate and that leads to a lawsuit pending and Foreman’s possible connection. This leads her to gorgeous professor Josh Gelston, which leads to dating the hunky guy, which leads to a whole mess of trouble. Will Charlie have the story to skyrocket her career or will she even survive to see another birthday?

A fast paced edgy debut mystery that will surely earn author Hank Phillippi Ryan a solid fan base. Her in-depth knowledge of the television industry comes alive in vivid Technicolor on the pages. With the numerous twists and turns to the storyline, readers will find it difficult to put the book down. Charlie is a likeable character who felt remarkably like a close friend; she is an engaging woman who will garner a large following in this reader’s opinion. Her dedication to her job and her warm and caring personality are admirable traits; her clever dialogue and intense focus on reporting wrongdoing cemented her series as a “must-read” series in this reader’s book. A perfect book for anyone who loves to be entertained, PRIME TIME is a marvelous debut novel.
