Review: Shape of Her Heart by Alice Maddox

Jeroen Alhalla is heir to the Alhalla name and fortune and like all others of her class and status, she is expected to have no magical abilities or Gifts. She hides the fact that she has visions from everyone because if it is discovered she has any kind of Gift she will be rejected by Society.

Quoi is a simple stone Shaper. Before he developed his Gift, he was a farm hand. Now though, his best friend, Rasa, is being wrongfully convicted and sent to prison for the disappearance of many Clan Elders and Quoi is determined to set him free and clear his name. Of course there are those who don’t want him to succeed in this and Quoi is forced to go on the run.

When Quoi tries to hide from those who are after him, in Jeroen’s room, another side of Jeroen and her Gifts are discovered. As the two journey to escape those who would enslave all of the Gifted, their bond grows. But even if they survive the fight to come, can they be together in a world that would keep them apart?

I liked this book. It was a bit slow to start but once the story gets past the setup, it moves at a good pace. I found that the issue of class and how it constrains and rules the life of the heroine to be well developed. The use of secondary characters was good as well, they were developed and interesting in their own right. I must say that the villain was thoroughly vile and his plans for Jeroen and those with Gifts should send shivers up a person’s back.
