Robert, the Marquess of Haverton, is tired of all the antics on the part of mothers and daughters to unfairly snare him. He has had to hop out windows and hide in fountains to escape an unwanted attachment. Robert decides to fight fire with fire by hiring his own chaperone. With his own chaperone, he can relax and enjoy himself, and not have to worry about any traps.
The Duchess of Waverly is sympathetic with her son’s plight and has just the person in mind. Catherine Hayword is not sure how this position will work but she cannot help but accept. She sees that Robert is in need of her assistance but soon falls into the same trap as the others. She knows nothing can come of her feelings. Robert barely knows her name.
