When Nellie Lachlan defied her family and married her childhood friend Teddy, she was told never to darken their doorstep ever again. Although Nellie is hurt, shocked and disappointed by her family’s obstinate refusal to accept her husband, she decides that she isn’t going to let them ruin her happiness, so she leaves Liverpool behind for the countryside and begins to make a new life for herself whilst her soldier husband Teddy is fighting in the war. When she finds out she’s pregnant, Nellie is absolutely delighted, however, her happiness is short-lived when she is informed that her mother and aunt were killed during the Liverpool Blitz.
Although Nellie is now firmly settled in the countryside, she realizes that she cannot leave her sisters, Babs and Lottie, by themselves in a city torn apart by the war; so she packs her bags and goes back to her hometown – only to find that her old home has been totally destroyed and that her sisters are homeless and penniless! In desperate need of somewhere to live, Nellie swallows her pride and begs her bitter grandfather for shelter in his house. After much grumbling, he accepts and Nellie is delighted – even though she knows that she will be treated like a skivvy by her grandfather!
Life for Nellie is not easy for she has to put up with her grandfather’s incessant demands as well as trying to play nursemaid to her injured younger sister Lottie, whilst trying to curb her sister Babs’ flighty ways. Nellie does not want Babs to get into any trouble, however, Babs is determined to inject some fun and excitement into her life – much to poor Nellie’s dismay!
But Babs’ flighty ways soon prove the least of her worries when she gets the dreaded telegram telling her that Teddy has died. Is Nellie going to let this news destroy her? Or will she be able to pick herself up and begin to look for the silver lining all over again?
