Castle of the Wolf – Sandra Schwab

"Sandra Schwab blends the chills and thrills of Victoria Holt with the lightness of touch of Julia Quinn in her second spine tingling Gothic romance Castle of the Wolf."

The death of her beloved father and her brother’s marriage to an unbearable woman with pretensions of grandeur have driven Miss Celia Fussell to the end of her tether! Cissy dreams of escaping her current situation and when she is informed that in his will her father left her a castle in the Black Forest she is delighted. Packing her belongings, Cissy leaves England behind and travels to Germany where she is determined to make a fresh start. But things aren’t quite as they seem…

Cissy is shocked at the decrepit state of the Castle – and she is equally shocked to realize that, in his will, her father gave her hand in marriage to the castle’s current owner Fenris Von Wolfenbach! Having fought in the war and been left scarred for the rest of his life, Fenris is not the most pleasant of men – and he is furious when he sees Cissy taking over his castle!

Having spent an entire decade holed up in his castle with only his servants for company, Fenris does not want or need Cissy bossing him about or changing things in his castle. And as for marriage, he’d sooner leave the castle than see the pity, disgust and contempt which he is sure Cissy feels towards him.

But Cissy soon grows to realize that beneath that scarred gruff man lies the heart of a wounded soul who is desperate for love and affection and before long, Cissy finds herself head over heels in love with her gruff wolf.

Yet, little do Fenris and Cissy know that someone is determined to wreck any chance of happiness they might have – and they’ll stop at nothing until they achieve their aim.

Although some historical anachronisms did sometimes mar my enjoyment of the tale, on the whole Castle of the Wolf is an enthralling Gothic romance laden with plenty of intriguing suspense, heart pounding romance and sensuous passion which will keep you riveted until the final page.
